So a while ago I was contacted by a radio station to see if I could get their ‘Now Playing’ songs sent automatically to Twitter for them in a way to attract more listeners for the station. They wanted a pretty simply ‘Now Playing on our station, Song by Artist’…

I’m always up for a challenge so though, ‘how hard could it be?’ Cut a long story short, it wasn’t that hard…

Then they said ‘I bet you can’t attach an image of the artist too?’ Challenge accepted! That wasn’t too hard either…

‘How about tagging the artist that is playing?’ they said… Yep, sorted!

Word caught on and soon I was doing this for a number of radio stations and so autopo.st was born.

Then came the service to send TuneIn.com the names of the songs stations were playing. Facebook seemed like the next obvious step.

Then came a service to detect if streaming servers were offline and alert via SMS, email and voice-call, but this service would depend on the status of the server and couldn’t detect silence. So the Silence Detector was introduced.

How about if our website goes offline? Ok, ok, here is the Website Down detector, which not only detects if the website is offline, but also if it not displaying the correct content.

We want Mobile Apps! Hmmm, OK, this one is a bit tougher! Back to the books to learn Java and Objective-C and produce some mobile apps that customers can configure via a custom control panel. Result? iOS, Android and Amazon mobile apps for radio stations…

What started as a bit of a challenge is now serving thousands of customers worldwide.

What’s next for autopo.st? Stay tuned! 😉
